Let it be

If we don’t compare it with what we would like it to be, what we think it should be, or what we thought it would be – everything is perfect as it is. And how do we know that? Because it is what it is, right now.

This refers to an inner attitude, not an outer action. It refers to accepting whatever happiness or pain comes our way, to be at peace with things as they are.

Of course, things aren’t always beautiful or fair, and there is much imperfection in the world. So, the fact that we recognise things as they are doesn’t necessarily mean we cannot act. We can act out of compassion, recognising the unfairness of the situation as it is. But, if we focus on how the situation should be, then we may act out of anger. Maybe the essence of non-violence is to act out of compassion.
