Patrul Rinpoche (1808–1887) was one of the most beloved and uncompromising spiritual masters of 19th-century Tibet. Born in the rugged eastern province of Kham—where people are known for their directness and bold spirit—he embodied the fierce honesty and humility of his homeland.
Recognized early in life as a tulku (a reincarnated teacher), Patrul Rinpoche was believed to be the rebirth of Palgué Samten Phuntshok, abbot of Palgué Monastery. But rather than settle into the comforts of institutional life, he chose the freedom of the open road. Leaving behind monastery duties, he lived as a wandering yogi, travelling from place to place, offering teachings wherever they were needed.
One of his most enduring contributions to the Nyingma tradition is the Kunzang Lamé Shelung—The Words of My Perfect Teacher. Written during a retreat in a cave near Dzogchen Monastery, it remains a foundational guide to the preliminary practices (ngöndro) of the Longchen Nyingthig lineage. The text is now widely translated and treasured by practitioners around the world.
In his later years, Patrul Rinpoche went into solitary retreat, living in a simple tent. During this time, a high lama arrived with a group of devoted pilgrims, eager to meet him. But Rinpoche had no interest in receiving visitors.
After some insistence, from inside his tent, he called out:
“You want to see me, but what’s the point, anyway? You won’t do what I tell you!”
“Yes, Rinpoche, of course we will!” the pilgrims replied.
“Well, then go to Dzagyal Monastery,” he said. “Make offerings to the embalmed body of my teacher. If you do that, your obstacles will be removed, and your prayers will be answered. You will not need anything else”
The pilgrims obeyed and later returned.
“Rinpoche, we did everything you said. We prayed and made offerings—but our wish still hasn’t come true.”
“Impossible. What was your wish?” he asked.
“To meet you.”
There was a long pause.
Then came his gruff reply:
“All right. Come in, then!”
Simple, fearless, and utterly sincere—Patrul Rinpoche continues to inspire spiritual seekers with his life and words.
